Why Hemiksem
The story of the Rupelstreek actually begins in Hemiksem. Around 1235 the monks of the Sint-Bernardus abbey restarted brick making, because they needed material for their own abbey. From there the industry gradually spread along the right bank of the Rupel. Later the centre of gravity shifted south and Hemiksem lost its role as a production centre.
What remained is a municipality on the water with a mixed fabric of smaller companies. Construction, engineering, trade, services. Companies that have done well for years on craftsmanship and personal contact, and that reach a point where the manual work starts holding them back.
