Why Boom
Few regions in Flanders have reinvented themselves as thoroughly as this one. In 1896, Boom alone counted 48 brickworks and 42 roof-tile and earthenware factories. From 1975 onwards most of them went under, undone by new building materials, more competition and pricier energy. What was left were clay pits and a region that had to come up with something else.
It managed. De Schorre, the recreation area where Tomorrowland is held, is an old clay pit. And where the old industry stood there is now a dense fabric of smaller companies: construction, engineering, transport, trade, services. Family businesses in their second or third generation, with processes that grew over the years and were rarely ever cleaned up. That is who we build for.
