Why Temse

Few municipalities have leaned on one company as heavily as Temse leaned on the Boelwerf. From 1829 to 1994 the yard built ships, at its peak with more than 3,200 employees, and it was by far the largest employer in the region. People from Temse, Hamme, Sint-Niklaas and Bornem earned their living there. After the bankruptcy in 1994 an entire high-tech sector disappeared from the country and the site was given a new purpose as an SME and residential zone.

What grew afterwards is a broad fabric of smaller companies. Metal, construction, engineering, trade, services. Often businesses started by people with a real trade, who today are running into the limits of their admin.
